APICS Growing Globally

During 2007, the year of its 50th anniversary, APICS saw international membership grow considerably, particularly in the Netherlands and Belgium. Nonprofit international associates (IAs) - who disseminate the APICS body of knowledge to international members in 28 countries as part of the International Membership Program - embarked on a renewed and concerted effort to promote awareness of membership in their countries.

In addition, APICS simplified the administrative aspect of membership with the synchronization of membership-period validity with IAs, enabling new memberships and renewals to be effected in a single process for both and associate and APICS membership categories. Through these combined efforts, 195 and 150 members were welcomed to the APICS international community through vLm (the APICS Dutch associate) and PICS Belgium, respectively.

To continue the growth spurt, several other IAs plan to step up promotional activities, including CPIM de France (France), SAPICS (South Africa) and ABAI (Brazil) in the coming year. Additional APICS member benefits will enhance these promotional efforts, and APICS will provide greater administrative and marketing support to assist with membership promotion and processing.

Growth also is expected in the worldwide education delivery of APICS through the introduction of new authorized education providers (AEPs). Several agreements with partners in the Netherlands, Italy, South Africa, China, Lebanon, and Turkey - and several more agreements pending in other localities - will enable individuals to gain APICS education and achieve the APICS CPIM and CSCP certifications. Company leaders also are taking advantage of these new opportunities on behalf of their employees.

Accessibility to APICS certification exams has been an obstacle to growth and a frustration for both individuals and corporations in recent years. The organization increased testing venues for APICS certification exams in Asia and has plans to make available additional venues in the Middle East. A public venue opened in Hong Kong in June 2007 and in Tokyo, Japan, in September 2007. For the March 2008 exams, three new public test sites - in Jakarta, Indonesia; Cebu City, Philippines; and Istanbul, Turkey - are available, while the application for a fourth in Cairo, Egypt, by Belgian representative CIMCIL, is being processed.

All tests at these sites are administered and proctored by independent centers but facilitated by a local APICS representative for registrations and support. Hong Kong and Tokyo are currently facilitated by ASCMS, a China AEP. The Jakarta venue is facilitated by APICS Singapore AEP SIMM, with the support of IPOMS in Indonesia. The Cebu City venue is facilitated by Australasian PICS and has been supported by corporate member Lexmark. The Istanbul venue is facilitated by the APICS Bulgarian international representative Symix.

Providing access to certification exams continues with high priority for Asia and the Middle East in early 2008, with plans to introduce computer-based testing in late 2008.
